Tennessee Valley Authority

The Tennessee Valley Authority, an agency of the U.S. government, is the nation’s largest public power provider and one of the country’s largest electric utilities. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system.

TVA supplies electricity for customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia, an area of about 80,000 square miles with a population of more than nine million, at prices below the national average. TVA sells electricity to 155 power distributor customers and various directly served industries and federal facilities.

Initially, federal appropriations funded all TVA operations. Direct appropriations for the TVA power program ended in 1959, and appropriations for TVA’s environmental stewardship, economic development, and multipurpose activities ended in 1999. TVA is now fully self-financing, funding operations almost entirely through operating revenues and power system financing. TVA receives no taxpayer money.
